FAQ’s

Many people have questions before they come to yoga. Sometimes, it‘s the unknown that keeps us from stepping through the door for our first class. Know that you are not alone and that each of us had our own concerns or hesitations prior to attending our first class. Here we will try to answer the most common questions we encounter, but please also see our blog section as we will write in depth on topics that may further answer your questions.

Intro to Yoga (15)

Why should I attend The Yoga Center?

Today, we all seek balance, health and an open, fresh perspective on life. TYC delivers holistic services and practices which provide physical movement as well as respite from the stress and demands of daily life. These offerings redefine our clients‘ view of wellness through increasing body awareness and thoughtful exercise. Be done with the days of struggling to find time and motivation to go to the gym for a workout focused on an external affirmation or benefit. Our classes take fitness beyond the hype to embrace a healthier, happier way to be your best… and, oh yeah, the Mt Olympus view from the studio is pretty sweet too. :-)

All yoga is the same, isn‘t it?

No. There are as many styles of yoga as there are teachers. We know you have many options for yoga classes and studios, so TYC strives to deliver experiences that are of the highest quality, for your overall wellbeing. Our motto is: Alignment Matters. The body has an innate wisdom to heal itself when restored into healthy alignment, and it is well known that movement performed with poor alignment can injure the body, so doing yoga poses well couldn‘t matter more!

What do I wear to yoga classes?

We keep the studio between 72 – 80 degrees for year-round comfort. We suggest comfortable, stretchy clothing. Most women wear a yoga top with leggings and men wear a tee with shorts.

What shouldn‘t I wear to yoga classes?

Our yoga practice teaches us that the midline is where we can connect to our true essence, and so to, the midline is where we can find our best clothing options. Too baggy, and the clothing may get in the way and obstruct the teachers view of your alignment. Too revealing, and you may be sharing more than your neighbor finds comfortable. Be respectful to all the students that share our space.

No socks. Do plan to practice in bare feet, this will assist in keeping you from sliding off your mat.

No perfumes please. Refrain from wearing scented lotions and perfumes, as people have allergies and asthma.

How do I prepare for a yoga class?

There is excellent information about this under our etiquette section. Please reference that list. Bottom line, bring yourself, your mat and an open mind. Don‘t eat right before class, be respectful of the space and other‘s practices, and enjoy the process of learning.

What is OM?

The sound of OM is actually a-u-m, pronounced

How often should I practice?

Ideally, yoga is meant to be a daily practice. As that is quite overwhelming to most of us, we recommend you set a goal you can realistically keep. Consistency is the key to progress – it‘s far better to attend one class per week on a regular basis than to attend four classes one week, none for the next two weeks, and one the next week. The more you practice, the better you will feel, and the more you will want to practice!

I can‘t touch my toes, is there a class for me?

One of the great things about yoga is that it brings us all to a common denominator – we all have struggles and worries. Everyone comes in a unique body and we all have a path that leads to a comfortable way of life. People come to TYC with differing levels of experience and there a place for everyone. We are ALL learning, talk to us, and we will point you in the right direction.

I‘m a beginner, what classes are for me?

This depends greatly on your current level of activity – notice not your flexibility level. At TYC, we have classes ranging from introductory basics, to gentle yoga, to highly challenging classes. If you live a very active life, you can pick more challenging classes to start with but if you are more sedentary, choose a less demanding class. Please refer to the class descriptions which will help in directing you to the right class. Note, some classes do have

I‘d like to bring yoga to my workplace. Do you offer this service?

We do! Our instructors have experience teaching in various settings. We are committed to offering yoga anywhere and everywhere we can! To arrange a corporate yoga class or series, please visit our community page or contact us.

Is yoga a religion?

No. Yoga postures are derived from a tradition that valued a seated meditation
practice. The poses are tools to open and strengthen the body and mind for an enduring day of concentration. Yoga has been practiced by individuals of widely differing beliefs for many centuries. You only need to accept the possibility of growth, change and that there is always more to learn. Yoga seeks to put us in touch with our innermost values and essence, connecting us deeper to all facets of our lives.
